Ayamonte Bike Hire
& Cycle Routes

Ayamonte Bike Hire

The area around the La Villa and Parador districts is quite hilly and can be tricky to negotiate on bicycle but the rest of the town is ideal for cycling. There are also a number of picturesque routes and cycle paths ideal for all ages and abilities.

A number of the hotels on Isla Canela have bikes for hire, in Ayamonte town Rent MoviMoto have bikes for rental. They have mountain bikes and city bikes available to rent on a hourly, daily and weekly basis. For the less energetic they have scooters, motorbikes and quadbikes available for rental.

The business is run by Antonio, a Dutch guy, he is fluent in English and always very helpful. MoviMoto have a number of guided tours available and will provide you with maps if necessary. They are situated close to the centre and also deliver to your hotel/accommodation if necessary.

If are thinking of buying a bike there are two cycle shops close to the centre. On Avenida Vila Real de Santo Antonio, sandwiched between the private pay & display car park and the Moroccan bar 'Topik', you will find Guadiana Deportes. On Avenida Cayetano Feu, almost opposite the new Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones, you will find a cycle store attached to the Tyre Replacement garage.

If you can travel a little further afield I would suggest you visit Carrefour at Cartaya. They always have a range of bikes reasonably priced.

Cycle Routes

Bicycling is on the increase in Spain as in most countries. As we all become more aware of green issues and global warming an increasing number of people are dusting off the bikes and using pedal power. In the town there was recently a rally by cyclists demanding more cycle paths.

There are a number of cycle routes in Ayamonte and on the newer developments of Isla Canela and Costa Esuri. It is possible to bicycle to Playa de Isla Canela from Ayamonte centre on cycle paths.

The road running alongside the marshes, Lope de Vega, has a cycle path which takes you past the new indoor swimming pool and down to the new football stadium. Once you get to the stadium cross the bridge on to Isla Canela. The road to the beach has an excellent wide cycle path especially suitable for youngsters.

There are alot of cycle paths on Isla Canela and on Punta del Moral. In winter when the weather is cooler it is an ideal way to get around. Costa Esuri is also good for cycling but is a little more hilly. There are a number of good off-road tracks for mountain bikers, ask Piers at Movi Moto for more details.

The route of the old railway line to Isla Cristina is also a very pleasant cycle ride. At the bottom of Avenida de la Constitucion cross the road so you are on the marsh side. There you will find a dirt track in the direction of Isla Cristina.

The track runs along the route of the old railway line. It is flat and it is possible to cycle all the way to Isla Cristina. There are excellent views of Isla Canela and Isla Cristina on one side and pine forests and orange groves to the other.

It is also very safe for children as no motorised vehicles are allowed on for most of the route. Beware, depending on the time of year, there can be alot of mosquitos around.

For mountain bike enthusiasts there is good route close to the town. If you go up Avenida de la Constitucion from the Dia supermarket at the first roundabout take the first exit. This takes you onto a small country road with a new development of houses on your left and the huerta (small farm) on your right.

After a few hundred metres the road becomes a track. Within half a mile you are in the countryside. At the top of the track you will come to a junction. Turn left if you want a shorter ride. This will bring you out near the Parador roundabout, be sure to enjoy the fantastic views of the river, bridge and towards Isla Canela.

If you turn right you will head in the direction of Isla Cristina. After a kilometre or so you will see a turn to the right. Take the right turn and you can ride through the orange groves. This track will eventually come out on the main road (N-431) that runs from Ayamonte to Isla Cristina.

You can turn right and head back to town on the main road. Or you can turn left ride along the road towards Isla Cristina. After 400/500 metres you will see a track to the right. The orange coloured pine tree lined track looks like the entrance to a farm and has orange groves to either side.

The public are allowed to use it, and leads down towards the marshes and joins the old railway track mentioned above. Join the railway track at the bottom of the hill and turn right to head back to Ayamonte.
