Costa Esuri
General Information

Costa Esuri is a new development located 4km north of Ayamonte town. The development is one of the largest building projects in Spain and when completed will have over 6000 dwellings.

Esuri is a project that has been in the planning for more than 20 years. Originally commenced by local developers and later sold to one of Spain's biggest building companies Fadesa. Fadesa are the main construction company and Costa Esuri is the largest real estate project the company have been involved in.

Fadesa have sold some parcelas (plots of land) to other developers. The first completed residences were handed to owners in 2005. The project is a long way from completion and will not properly mature for perhaps another 5 years.

Esuri is reached from Ayamonte by heading north out of town on Avenida de la Constitucion towards the A-49 motorway. On reaching the motorway roundabout go straight across and Costa Esuri begins.

Esuri is situated on the banks of the River Guadiana and built around two 18 hole golf courses. Both golf courses have been designed by the renowned Spanish golf course architect Jose Canales. Golf course I is close to the river and has the feel of a links course. The first course opened in December 2006 and the second is due to open towards the end of 2007 or early 2008.

The development affords all its residents fantastic views towards the river, bridge and Portugal, golf course or countryside. Esuri has been created in a mediterranean style with low-rise, low density building.

Esuri has three types of residences. A number of low-rise apartment blocks, town houses that have been built in manzanas, squares, clustered around swimming pools and nine hundred individual villa plots. Development on the apartments and town houses is advanced and villas are slowly beginning to be built.

Esuri will have three hotels, two 4 star and one 5 star, but has not been created as a pure resort facillity. The project has been structured to create a small town with all the necessary amenities. There are areas allocated for health care, education, shopping centres, restaurants, bars, sports and leisure.

Fadesa have purchased the nearby fish farm and plan to convert this into a leisure marina. This plan has the support of the Ayamonte town hall and there is a need for more marina berths in the area. However, the plan is being strongly opposed by green protesters unhappy at the environmental consequences.

Esuri is not without its' detractors, primarily the environmentalist lobby. The project is built largely on marismas, marshland, which was home to large amount of wildlife. Golf courses are on the whole being viewed by the 'greens' as unecessary water wasteage, especially in a country where water is in short supply.

In its' defence it is diffcuilt to imagine the creation a of new town anywhere without some environmental damage. The project has been created in a tasteful way with a low density of development. Ayamonte Ayuntamiento (town hall) has learnt from some of the other Spanish Costas and created a prestigious development to enhance the attractions of the area.
