Ayamonte - Getting There
Travel & Transfers

Flying to Ayamonte

One day, somewhere over the horizon, Huelva will have an International Airport. That day is drawing nearer, honest guv! Progress has been made on the long-proposed Huelva Airport scheme and a viability study has begun on a site near Gibraleon. Realistic targets for the opening of the airport are 2013 at the earliest.

So in the meantime, on this page we will cover travelling to Ayamonte and transfers from the existing airports. There are three options for those flying in from the UK or Ireland. The closest airport is Faro in Portugual then Seville and Jerez in Spain. Faro and Seville have low-cost airlines flying in from the UK and Ireland. Jerez has flights from the UK only. For a list of routes and airlines from each airport click on the airport links.

Faro is a 35 minute drive from Ayamonte and is very straightforward to get to and from. The IP1, the Portuguese motorway that runs through the Algarve, is very rarely congested. Don't forget to take into to account the 1 hour time difference. If you need to be at the airport at 8pm Portuguese time, for instance, leave Ayamonte at 8pm Spanish time. This will give you plenty of time to drop your hire car and be on time.

Seville Airport is about 1 hour 30 minutes drive away. This is at non-peak times. During rush hour the journey can take up to an hour longer, so be aware. Jerez, in off-peak, is about 2 hours and 30 minutes drive. However, again be aware of rush-hour as you have to pass through Seville on the motorway.

For directions from the airports click on the links below. Car Hire at the airports is covered in Getting Around .

Transfers From The Airports To Ayamonte

The best way to get from Faro airport to Ayamonte, if you are not driving, is to arrange a transfer with one of the dedicated transfer companies. Taxis are easy to pick up at the the airport but will work out expensive.

There are two companies in particular that have been having good reviews. Transfers Huelvas run a shuttle service from Faro to all the hotels on the Huelva coastline. They currently charge €25 per person from Ayamonte to Faro airport. If there is one or two of you this is the cheaper option. It takes an hour from Ayamonte on the shuttle and the service runs every two hours. They have desk at the airport where you can book on arrival.

Low Cost Transfers operate individual cars and charge a flat rate of €57 for up to 4 people. So for small groups this is the cheaper option with the additional benefit of not being a shuttle.

From Seville Transfers Huelva wil be operating shuttle service in the near furure.

Unfortunately there are no shuttle type transfer services available from Jerez Airport to Ayamonte. Car Hire is the most economical option.

There are Bus Services and Train Services available from Faro and Seville airports. Unfortunately neither is particularly convenient or efficient.

Driving to Ayamonte

For the more adventurous who are thinking of driving from the UK or Ireland , if you have the time, it can be a fantastic journey. You can drive through France, as we did, or catch the ferry to northern Spain to reduce the amount of driving time.

We opted to take our time and took a break at Euro Disney on the way. We drove from London to Paris on day one and then spent 3 nights at Euro Disney (which is not a patch on Florida, by the way, but the kids loved it). On day 5 we drove from Paris to Bordeaux.

On reflection we would do it again without staying at Euro Disney and make more stops on the way down, to appreciate the beautiful scenery. From Bordeaux we drove over the border and down to Salamanca. If you get the opportunity to visit this beautiful city be sure to take the chance.

From Salamanca it's about a 6 hour drive to Ayamonte. There is a new motorway being built on this stretch which is now mostly open. Don't forget to take into account the toll charges, although they can be avoided if you're not in a rush.

All in all it's a worthwhile trip and I would do it again with some of the provisos outlined above. To help plan your route there are a number of free route planners available. We used the RAC Route Planner but The AA Route Planner is also very good. Have a look at the national and regional Maps to start planning your route.
